Romy grew up in Elliston on the remote West Coast of South Australia. He graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Visual Art in 2001 and has been developing his style as an emerging artist since then. Over the years, Romy has mostly worked in illustration and painting, with a focus on Australian street surf culture. His stylised characters in earlier work are cartoon-like, with a sense of humour and quirk.
Romy’s mixed-media approach using Perspex demonstrates his creativity and ingenuity as an artist. After receiving positive feedback through sales of early pieces in this technique, he decided to explore the medium further. One of his first Perspex pieces won Highly Commended at the Port Lincoln Art Prize in 2012. His artwork ‘Crushed’, featured in this exhibition, also won Highly Commended at the Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize in 2016.
