Kathryn has been creating art in various forms for over 40 years. She studied Fine Art (Painting) at the South Australian School of Art and taught art for many years.
Her recent work is inspired by her travels particularly to India, China and Italy. Places and experiences are recorded and remembered as small abstract water-colour paintings in travel journals, then when at home painted on a larger scale where the journey with materials and process begins.
She paints on handmade mulberry paper sourced from China using coloured inks and soft Chinese brushes. The use of these materials was influenced by her travel in China where she learnt about traditional painting techniques and materials, which was a pivotal and serendipitous experience that profoundly changed her painting practice.
Painting with ink allows Kathryn to work spontaneously and intuitively, responding to places, experiences and memories and connecting through use of materials and techniques. The first mark dictates the direction of the composition and layers are built up to create movement, shape and texture, revealing new forms and colour relationships. A rhythm and pattern evolve recalling and evoking the essence of a place, an experience, emotion or memory.
