Close to Home: SALA 2026 at Art Images Gallery

This year, Art Images Gallery is pleased to be part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival with Close to Home: a group exhibition celebrating the diverse ways artists respond to the places, experiences and environments that shape them.

Bringing together 15 artists working across painting, sculpture, glass and mixed media, Close to Home explores the familiar from many different perspectives. From quiet observations of everyday life and domestic spaces to imagined worlds, landscapes and reflections on our relationship with nature, each artist offers their own distinctive way of seeing.

Rather than presenting a single style or approach, the exhibition brings together works that share a common thread: an interest in the world around us and the experiences that give meaning to the places we call home.

The Artists...

Nicole Ayliffe

Nicole Ayliffe explores the optical qualities of glass, combining thick, clear glass forms with photographic and engraved imagery. Drawing inspiration from the natural environment, her work captures the beauty, texture and patterns of nature in striking sculptural forms.

Hamish Fleming

Hamish Fleming brings together grunge aesthetics and classical realism, finding beauty and intrigue in the overlooked details of everyday life. Working directly from life, his atmospheric paintings create subtle tensions between the familiar and the unexpected.

Christopher Meadows

Christopher Meadows is drawn to figurative painting and sculpture, using traditional mediums and carefully considered composition to create works with an enigmatic quality. His imagery draws on natural and urban landscapes, as well as familiar memories and experiences of domestic life.

Sue Michael

Sue Michael’s practice explores ideas of place and everyday life, informed by her long-standing engagement with photography, painting and genre painting. Her work reflects a considered observation of environments and the ways in which places are experienced, remembered and understood.

Alison Mitchell

Working directly from life, Alison Mitchell’s still-life paintings are grounded in careful observation, composition and an appreciation of light. Flowers, fruit and found objects become subjects through which she explores subtle shifts in colour, texture, perspective and perception.

Marc Newton

Marc Newton creates bold, textured paintings and wall sculptures using plywood, acrylic paint, timber, stain and liquid resin. His work draws heavily on the clean forms, architecture and design language of mid-century modernism.

Thomas Reeves

Thomas Reeves’ Woodland sculptures combine delicate human forms with intricate networks of lost-wax cast bronze branches. The series reflects on humanity’s relationship with the natural world, creating a quiet dialogue around conservation, change and our hopes for the future.

Todd Romanowycz (Romy)

Todd Romanowycz, known as Romy, brings together painting, illustration and mixed media with a distinctive connection to Australian street and surf culture. His inventive Perspex works combine stylised imagery, humour and experimentation with the possibilities of the medium.

Harry Sherwin

Harry Sherwin works across watercolour, oils, mixed media and collage, creating painterly works spanning landscape, seascape, still life, interiors and the figure. His paintings are grounded in close observation and a strong appreciation for colour, particularly the changing light and seasons of the Clare Valley.

Adam Tarif

Adam Tarif’s playful paintings explore interiors, objects and the relationship between art and everyday space. Bold colour, flattened perspective and pattern transform familiar domestic settings into highly stylised scenes, where art historical references, design and narrative come together.

Louise Vadasz

Louise Vadasz’s recent still-life paintings are characterised by rich, heavy impasto and oil painted on transparent linen. Her works celebrate the tactile qualities of paint, allowing texture, surface and colour to become central to the experience of the subject.

Mark Warren

Mark Warren’s colourful paintings are infused with life and humour, drawing inspiration from history, music, landscape and suburban surroundings. His evolving practice moves between abstraction, primitivism, figuration and Folk Expressionism, capturing the character of everyday life.

Ross Wilsmore

Ross Wilsmore is known for dramatic landscapes that heighten colour and light to create moody, often surreal environments. His paintings explore the relationship between people and the landscape, with an instantly recognisable visual style shaped by his long-standing background in both art and design.

Dan Withey

Dan Withey’s vivid paintings draw on graphic art, storytelling, illustration and pattern to blur the boundaries between imagination and reality. Playful and surreal, his highly detailed compositions combine bold colour, unusual scale and recurring motifs to explore contemporary life and the human experience.

Elizabeth Wojciak

Elizabeth Wojciak’s paintings move between abstraction and figuration, embracing the physicality of paint and a process shaped by accident, ambiguity and instinct. Layered symbolic imagery and fleeting references from everyday life invite viewers to find their own meaning while reflecting on connection, resilience and what it means to be human.
