A surfer from way back, Ross Wilsmore’s first experience in commercial art was when he was sixteen, painting surfboard designs in Melbourne – a practice he still continues today. Moving from painting to design and running his own graphic design studio for 25 years, Wilsmore returned to the brush in 2005 and has developed a career in fine art, working from his studio in Cheltenham, Victoria. He is now living on South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula. Wilsmore’s speciality is landscapes. Using acrylics, he takes his colours and enhances the visual by accentuating the moody and compellingly surreal light effects. His art is dramatic and often surreal. He explores the impact of man upon his landscape and how each affects and changes the other. The juxtaposition of all elements in the piece accentuates the unique character of each individual element. His aim as an artist is to ensure that his work is instantly recognizable – that people will look at it and know straight away they are looking at a painting by Ross Wilsmore.
