Art Images Gallery is delighted to present Emma Young’s latest exhibition, Stones and Lines — a luminous exploration of material, memory, and belonging through the medium of glass. Each hand-blown artwork reflects Emma’s distinctive approach to storytelling in form, inspired by both her personal history and the landscapes that shape her creative vision.
Emma Young is an Adelaide-based glass artist who graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Arts (Glass) from the University of South Australia under the guidance of renowned artist Gabriella Bisetto. In 2015, a transformative experience at Pilchuck Glass School in the U.S. accelerated her technical and conceptual development, followed by completion of the JamFactory Associate Training Program (2016–17) — a cornerstone of South Australia’s contemporary craft and design scene.
After her residency, Emma remained a studio tenant at the JamFactory for two years, refining her practice and developing her signature collections. Her earlier designs — including the beloved Frog Cake Keepsake and FruChoc Bowl — celebrate nostalgia and local identity, while her Watermelon series (2017) reflects on joyful family memories of South Australian summers.
In 2019, following a trip to her maternal grandparents’ home country of Malta, Emma presented her debut solo exhibition EYG at Urban Cow Studio, launching new works Prickly Pears and Stone Walls. These collections deepened her connection to place and heritage, themes that continue to resonate in Stones and Lines.
Emma’s practice is driven by both technical mastery and emotional resonance. Her glass artworks explore nostalgia, shared experiences, and pride in local icons, often translating the textures and rhythms of everyday life into translucent sculptural form.
Beyond the studio, Emma’s achievements include teaching and exhibiting both nationally and internationally. She has attended major glass conferences in Melbourne, Tasmania, Berlin, and Texas, and in July 2025, she returned to Pilchuck Glass School as a teaching assistant for a class led by Ed Schmid, Brian Kerkvliet, and Lucio Bubacco.
Her work has been featured in The Corning Museum of Glass’s New Glass Review, a prestigious international annual highlighting the world’s leading glass artists. Emma has also appeared on Australian television programs Totally Wild and Behind the News (BTN), and has been a finalist in several major art prizes including the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize and the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize.
Today, Emma continues to blow glass at the JamFactory’s Adelaide studio, where visitors can watch her create both exhibition pieces and production works. Through her practice, she fosters a sense of connection between artist, material, and audience — an ethos beautifully embodied in Stones and Lines.
