Contemporary Sculpture in Adelaide Inspired by Nature and the Human Form

Peter Syndicas’ latest exhibition at Art Images Gallery (20 March to 19 April 2026) brings a striking new body of work to Adelaide, offering a compelling exploration of contemporary sculpture grounded in both nature and the human form. For those seeking contemporary sculpture in Adelaide, this exhibition presents a rare opportunity to experience one of Australia’s most distinctive sculptural voices.

Since 1997, Syndicas has drawn inspiration from the simplest organic forms found in nature, most notably twigs. Fragile and weathered, shaped by time and the elements, these forms become the foundation of his practice. Through a meticulous sculptural process, they are magnified to a monumental scale, abstracted, and cast into enduring materials such as bronze, steel, and stone. The result is a powerful tension between delicacy and permanence, where fleeting natural structures are transformed into lasting sculptural statements.

What defines Syndicas’ work is a compelling duality. Each sculpture exists simultaneously as a magnified fragment of organic life and as an abstract reflection of the human figure. By selecting natural forms that subtly echo human gesture and posture, he creates works that feel both familiar and enigmatic. The boundary between botanical structure and the human condition dissolves, inviting viewers into a more contemplative and emotional reading of form.

In 2026, Syndicas marks 29 years of exploring the human form through the lens of plant life. While his techniques and materials have evolved, this enduring focus has allowed him to develop a distinctive sculptural language, one that continues to grow while remaining deeply rooted in nature.

Over the past decade, his practice has expanded in scale and ambition, resulting in major commissions and internationally recognised projects. These include a significant installation at Marina Bay Sands and a record setting suspended bronze sculpture at Burnside Village. Such works demonstrate his ability to translate delicate natural inspiration into bold, architectural forms that command space and attention.

The current exhibition at Art Images Gallery highlights Syndicas’ masterful use of materials. Bronze captures intricate detail and preserves the essence of organic form, steel introduces strength and a contemporary edge, and stone offers a sense of timelessness and grounding. Together, these materials reinforce the central narrative of transformation, where nature’s smallest elements are reimagined as enduring works of art.

Running until 19 April 2026, this exhibition is a must see for anyone interested in Adelaide art exhibitions, modern sculpture in Australia, and contemporary Australian artists. Through this latest body of work, Peter Syndicas invites us to reconsider the natural world, revealing how even its most fragile forms can hold profound connections to the human experience.
