Open Field: Four Artists, Four Perspectives on Nature and Abstraction

Open Field: Four Artists, Four Perspectives on Nature and Abstraction

26 June – 26 July | Art Images Gallery, Adelaide

This winter, Art Images Gallery invites you to experience Open Field, a captivating group exhibition bringing together four accomplished contemporary artists: Amica Aindow, Cate Maddy, Cristina Metelli and Diana Wiseman.

Running from 26 June to 26 July 2026, Open Field celebrates the many ways artists respond to landscape, memory and emotion through abstraction. While each artist has developed a distinctive visual language, together their works create a thoughtful dialogue around colour, atmosphere, place and our connection to the natural world.

Rather than offering one singular interpretation of landscape, Open Field encourages visitors to explore the richness that comes from different perspectives. Across the exhibition you'll encounter moments of bold expression alongside quiet contemplation, paintings that suggest rather than describe, and works that reward those willing to slow down and spend time looking.

Four Distinctive Artistic Voices

Amica Aindow

Working with fluid acrylics and inks, Amica Aindow embraces the natural movement of water and pigment, allowing each painting to evolve through a delicate balance of chance and intention. Her luminous abstract works evoke a sense of calm and spaciousness, inspired by the Japanese concept of Ma—the meaningful space between things. The result is a collection of paintings that invite stillness and reflection, reminding us that what remains unspoken can often be just as powerful as what is seen.

Cate Maddy

Based in a bushland studio in regional Victoria, Cate Maddy creates richly layered contemporary still life paintings inspired by the native garden she has carefully cultivated around her home. Her work celebrates colour, movement and the quiet beauty found in everyday objects. By combining expressive mark-making with carefully observed forms, Cate invites viewers to consider the relationships we build with both the natural environment and the objects that shape our daily lives.

Cristina Metelli

Originally from Milan and now based in Adelaide, Cristina Metelli paints from memory and emotion rather than direct observation. Her expressive abstract landscapes explore themes of belonging, place and the restorative power of nature. Through intuitive gesture and vibrant colour, Cristina captures not simply what a landscape looks like, but the emotional experience of being immersed within it. Her paintings speak to the universal desire to connect with the places that ground us.

Diana Wiseman

With a career spanning decades, Diana Wiseman continues to draw inspiration from the Australian landscape and rural life. Her intuitive approach allows each painting to unfold naturally through colour, line and expressive mark-making. Rather than depicting specific locations, Diana's paintings evoke memory, atmosphere and a profound sense of place. They carry a remarkable freedom and confidence, reflecting both the joy of painting and a lifelong relationship with the Australian landscape.

A Conversation Through Contemporary Australian Art

Although each artist approaches abstraction differently, together they create an exhibition that feels cohesive, generous and deeply immersive. Their shared sensitivity to nature, colour and emotion allows visitors to discover unexpected connections between the works while appreciating the individuality of each artistic practice.

Whether you're an established collector, a lover of contemporary Australian art, or simply looking for an inspiring Adelaide art exhibition to visit this winter, Open Field offers an opportunity to experience four remarkable artists brought together in one beautiful exhibition.
