Impressions is a rich and engaging group exhibition currently on view at Art Images Gallery, showcasing the breadth, depth, and diversity of contemporary printmaking in Australia. Featuring works by Anna Austin, Christina Cordero, David Frazer, Kati Thamo, Sandra Starkey Simon & Fanny Retsek, and Georgina Willoughby, this exhibition is a visual journey through personal narratives, environmental observation, and technical mastery.
Through traditional and experimental printmaking techniques—including etching, linocut, mezzotint, screen printing, monotype, and printed jewellery—each artist brings a distinct perspective and approach to the medium.
Known for her moody, tonal mezzotints and etchings, Anna Austin draws deeply on her experiences with traditional Japanese papermaking and pilgrimage. Her prints reflect an inner stillness and sensitivity to place, inspired by travel through Japan’s Shikoku Island and its ancient 88 Temple Pilgrimage. With influences from indigo dyeing (aizome) and handmade washi paper, Austin’s works convey a deep reverence for craftsmanship, nature, and spiritual reflection.
Christina Cordero’s imagery emerges from a symbolic, highly personal world influenced by music, memory, and Latin-American magical realism. Her works suggest a poetic intersection of antique maps, imagined languages, and mythic forms—all underscored by a lifetime of artistic exploration across Chile, France, and Australia. As Christina has now ceased producing new work, Art Images Gallery is honoured to share selected pieces from her final remaining collection—spanning four decades of artistic inquiry.
With his renowned narrative prints, David Frazer brings a master storyteller’s sensibility to wood engraving, linocut, and etching. His poignant images explore themes of longing, loss, and isolation—set against humble, often rural backdrops. His fine attention to detail and technical skill have made him a leading voice in Australian printmaking, with works held in major national and international collections.
Kati Thamo’s work weaves together metaphor, visual storytelling, and environmental consciousness. Her prints often feature a cast of symbolic characters—animals, objects, and figures—that act out fable-like narratives exploring vulnerability, resilience, and transformation. Influenced by her Hungarian heritage and a deep engagement with natural systems, her work invites viewers into imaginative, emotionally charged worlds.
This collaborative duo shares a decades-long creative partnership rooted in mutual respect, friendship, and environmental concern. Working together since their days at San Jose State University, Sandra Starkey Simon and Fanny Retsek continue to collaborate from opposite sides of the world—Australia and the U.S. Their layered prints are the result of intuitive processes, often inspired by place, history, and shared experiences. Works in this exhibition were developed during a residency in Massachusetts, reflecting themes of winter landscapes and the harsh contrast of Australia’s drought-ridden summer.

A rising voice in South Australian printmaking, Georgina Willoughby creates semi-abstract compositions that speak to the layers and textures of built and natural environments. Working from Stone & Quoin Studios in Hindmarsh, her mixed-process works combine waterless lithography, screen printing, and etching. Her wearable print jewellery—on display in this exhibition—translates her visual language into tactile, intimate forms, expanding the boundaries of what printmaking can be.

Impressions offers more than a showcase of individual practices—it’s a celebration of the expressive potential of printmaking itself. From delicate mezzotints and robust linocuts to intricate layered monotypes, the exhibition honours the physical, hands-on processes that give print its enduring appeal.
Visitors are invited to engage with works that reveal both artistic vision and technical rigour—each piece offering a unique story told through line, texture, and mark-making.
