In Stillness and Light 2025, Alison Mitchell explores the still life tradition with timeless elegance and contemporary sensitivity. Her subjects—glassware, ceramics, garden produce, floral arrangements—are painted directly from life in her regional South Australian studio near Riverton.
These works reflect her deep commitment to observation, composition, and the shifting qualities of light. Through careful arrangement and painting from life, Mitchell transforms familiar objects into meditative visual poems that celebrate presence, stillness, and seasonal rhythms.
“Painting directly from life is integral to my creativity. It is a connection to life and to time; to both its brevity and its vast expansiveness.”

Alison Mitchell is a regional South Australian visual artist celebrated for her still life paintings. Based near Riverton, she works from her studio on a property she shares with her husband, renowned portrait artist Robert Hannaford.
Mitchell’s practice is rooted in traditional observation-based painting, informed by her academic background—she holds a First Class Honours degree in Anthropology from the University of Adelaide—and years of life drawing and study of Asian art.
“My work centres on the still life tradition of domestic objects, intentionally arranged and composed in the studio… It demands attentiveness to the fall of light, the intersection of shadows, of elation and uncertainty.”
Mitchell signs her work as Alison Mitchell, and her art has been collected and exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally.
