Suzie Riley (b.1965) is a South Australian artist who draws inspiration from the rolling hills, natural bush and vast seascapes that surround her home on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Living and working on the coast is key to Riley's connection to the landscape. The colours of the earth, the sea, and native plants have become part of her subconscious narrative. Exploring the duality of nature, her work revolves around the pulse and life of the environment. The energy in the tension of opposing forces and finding their ultimate balance is of primary focus to Riley's practice.
Layering transparency and opacity, Riley builds her work with calligraphic mark and thick impasto paint, combining a love of irregular shapes and patterns with considered tone and colour to describe the natural landscape.
She has been selected for many of Australia's leading landscape prizes, including the Paddington Art Prize, the Hawksbury Art Prize (where she was the recipient of a two-week residency), the Tatiara Art Prize, and in Adelaide, the Parklands and Adelaide Hills Art Prizes. Riley has worked as a tutor for Grampian Brushes, and was most recently named the inaugural recipient of a week-long residency on the Coorong.
