Alison is a full time potter and teacher working from her studio in Hawthorndene, South Australia. Her creative experience spans over a 30 year career working both in the UK and Australia. Her formal art school education began in 1999 when she moved to Adelaide, beginning at North Adelaide School of Art and completing her degree at Adelaide Centre for the Arts. This was followed by a traineeship and residency at the JamFactory, where she spent several years exploring the translucent qualities porcelain and developing a range of porcelain lights. Clay has been part of Alison’s life for as long as she can remember, some of her earliest memories are of forming creatures from the sticky red ‘Murram’ mud in Kenya where she spent several years of her early childhood, and then at high school, creating elaborate sculptural animals and Celtic inspired coil pots. Alison enjoys the challenge of creating new forms from her extensive library of techniques whether it’s drinking vessels, bowls or kitchenware thrown on the wheel or ultra-fine pinched porcelain pieces formed by hand. She loves each part of the process from the design stage and the consideration of form and functional to indulging in the elaborate, highly decorated whimsy of her exhibition pieces.
