Remembering Michael Leunig (1945 – 2024)

Art Images Gallery has had the honour of representing Michael Leunig for over 30 years.

In recent years Michael became more curious of the Gallery in Adelaide that was getting so much interest in his work, and we were delighted when he visited us during his exhibitions in 2022 and 2024 when he held a series of talks in the Gallery. This year Art Images Gallery is celebrating its 40th year and the two recent Leunig Exhibitions and visits undoubtedly stand out as momentous events in the history of the Gallery. We cannot recall an artist who has brought so much joy in such volume. Seeing how people responded to Michael’s work and their memories of his earlier works (many of which we had on show) was remarkable.

Michael more than once conveyed that he thought Adelaide was beautiful and had a quality that he had not found elsewhere. He was kind to all the staff and clients, and we share many fond memories. His unique perspective will live on through his drawings, his words, and in the hearts of everyone who was touched by his creativity.

Michael was more than a cartoonist - he was a storyteller, a philosopher, and an unique voice. Through his iconic characters, like the Little Man and the Duck, Michael captured the beauty, absurdity, and deep humanity of the world around us. His work invited us to pause, reflect, and embrace the simple joys of life.

Thank you, Michael, for your extraordinary contribution to the world, you will be missed.
