Hinterland Hues 2025: New Work by Aidan Weichard

21 March – 19 April 2025

We are thrilled to present Hinterland Hues 2025, a new exhibition by Gippsland-based artist Aidan Weichard, on view from March 21 to April 19. Known for his energetic brushwork and vibrant portrayals of Australian wildlife and rural life, Aidan’s latest body of work brings together personal experience, deep-rooted passions, and the lush vitality of nature.

The exhibition was born from a two-month road trip Aidan took with his family through the New South Wales north coast in late 2024. Travelling by caravan, they immersed themselves in the vibrant hinterland landscapes—a rich tapestry of greenery, wildlife, and sensory detail that left a lasting impression.

“The deeply textured, layered and luscious greenery of the hinterlands inspired this latest collection,” says Aidan. “Green is definitely the theme in these pieces, with varying hues used to represent the abundance and energy of life in nature.”

Aidan’s work has always drawn from his lifelong love of animals and the natural world. Growing up in the rainforest hills of Victoria, surrounded by wildlife, this fascination has never left him. Today, he lives with his wife Jennifer, their daughter Lyrical, two Australian Shepherds (Disney and Faloo), a cat named Flower, two horses, and four chickens on a small hobby farm on the cusp of Gippsland—a place he proudly calls home and a daily source of inspiration.

“I’ve drawn ever since I can remember, and somehow my work always came out in the form of animals,” he reflects. “It’s a passion that’s stuck.”

In Hinterland Hues, familiar subjects return—livestock, working dogs, native animals, and flora still-life compositions—but there’s a renewed energy pulsing through the canvas. His signature mixed media layering brings dynamic texture and movement to every piece, echoing the natural rhythms of the land.

More than just landscapes or animal portraits, these works reflect the deep interconnectedness between flora and fauna, land and life. The spirit of the hinterland is captured not just in what Aidan paints, but in how he paints—instinctively, expressively, and with a clear emotional tether to place and memory.
