Watermelon Sparkle

Playful yet personal artwork collection, referencing the joyful nostalgia of eating watermelon in my grandmother’s backyard as a child growing up. This series began in 2016 and comprises many forms, sizes, techniques and aesthetics.

‘Being the firstborn grandchild, I reflect on the passing years, bonding with my family, gaining siblings and cousins as I aged. Sunny weekends meant afternoon barbecues at Nana Young’s house, always ending with tasty watermelon. This turned into a ritual for us kids, who were sent outside to eat on the grass, the adults being exempt from this rule. Even after the turn of the century, I still sat in the backyard with my younger Young family members to munch on our slices of fresh fruit, spitting the pips onto the grass, experiencing our quintessential childhood rite of passage.’
