As 'Close To Home' as it gets, these pears travelled only a few metres from tree to studio. Almost exclusively grown in SA, they are small and compact with thick stems and a lovely blush as they ripen.
The composition has an informality about it. The basket is off-centre, balanced by a single free-standing pear. Curving rhythms of cane basketry have a counterpoint in the informal huddle of fruit. My abiding respect for the work of Cezanne can be traced in the painting's modelling and tonal colour.
