Silvio Apponyi is well known locally for his major sculptural commissions dotted around South Australia: the life-sized granite sea lion at the Adelaide Zoo and Granite Island, the 'Whale Tail' fountain at Victor Harbor and the beautiful water features at Burnside Village. However, these represent just a small portion of the vast public artworks Apponyi has undertaken around the country from SA to Tamworth, NSW to Airlie Beach, QLD.
Silvio has recently founded and directed the Adelaide Hills International Sculpture Symposium, and been on the panel of judges for the Waterhouse Natural History Art Prize. He recently attended the World Crafts Council Golden Jubilee Celebration in China, where he was awarded Second Prize for wood carving. Apponyi admits his favourite medium is wood and classifies himself foremost as a carver. His interest in animals began during childhood and has remained with him ever since.
Widely acknowledged for his contribution to sculpture in South Australia, Silvio was given an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2020. He continues to work from his home workshop in Balhannah, South Australia.
