One time engineering student, construction worker, sheep station hand, petrol station hand, commercial artist, shearer’s cook and winery cellar hand. Self-taught with a country upbringing, Russell Morrison has been a full-time artist in Adelaide since 1989, working in oil, watercolour, silk-screen, linoprint, etching and sculptural materials. For many people the outback conjures up thoughts of heat, sand, drought and despair but for Russell these scenes provide the backdrop for many a masterpiece. This collection has its genesis in some of the characters he encounters and searches out during times at home and away. “There is so much about the landscape of Australia that appeals to me, including the wide horizon, the shapes of the sandhills, the shadows on the ground and the wildlife that thrives in a seemingly arid, harsh country”.
