Born in the South Australian country town of Pinaroo in the 1950’s, Peter Johnson’s ceramic works reflect memory and experience of the Australian landscape, visible in the remnants of our industrial, suburban and maritime places, memories of daily living on the land and the expansiveness of the rural environment.
Using terracotta and stoneware clay he makes ceramic works that include cups, bowls, sculptural vessels and figurative forms. Surface decoration includes drawing, painting and creating texture through carving and scratching.
His work displays an aesthetic and intuitive interaction with the clay that captures moments in time and place, creating both a whimsical and poignant aspect.
Peter Johnson completed a Bachelor of Design in Ceramics and Glass at the South Australian College of Advanced Education and later obtained a Master of Fine Art Degree from Monash University. For over 35 years Peter has maintained an active studio practice including the Jam Factory, Jamboree Clay Workshop and currently at Gaff Studio, Port Adelaide.

Recognised as one of South Australia’s leading ceramic artists Peter Johnson’s work has been shown widely and is held in public and private collections. He continues to make work in his Port Adelaide studio.
