Born in Paris in 1953, Guy Detot first studied woodwork at the prestigious Ecole Boule. While studying woodwork, Guy also studied ballet and soon he was offered a scholarship to study dance with the Folkwangschule. In 1973, he moved to Essen, Germany, where he joined companies as prestigious as Pina Bausch, Koln Tanz forum and also the Ballet Rambert, in England, with which he toured all over the word.
He met his wife while she was touring in Europe with the Australian Dance Theatre. Together they headed back to Australia where Guy resumed his successful career in dance, performing with the Australian Dance Theatre and being nominated three times as best Australian Male Modern Dancer. He finally created his own dance company, Theatre Encore.
In 1990, Guy decided to change his career. He and his wife set up a Clydesdale farm, moved to Penola, and enjoyed a country lifestyle with their two children. During his dancing years, Guy never travelled without his wood tools. When he discovered the amazing qualities of local Red Gum, he naturally resumed sculpting.
Guy still lives in Penola and it seems he would not live anywhere else. He now owns his own art gallery. Many more prizes and awards have punctuated his career: the government of South Australia owns one of his 10,000 year-old red gum sculptures and a similar one has been acquired by the director of The French National Plastic Arts Center. Numerous French and Australian wineries have also been extremely supportive of his work.
Guy uses his knowledge of bodies to enhance the beauty of the wood. He uses the quality of the wood to enhance the expressions of his bodies. Both his male and female figures are very sensual and yes, you can touch them. Actually, you will find out it is very difficult not to.
