This one in the series of Ginkgo leaf paintings are part of my recent move to take my still life painting out into the landscape of my Adelaide Hills garden. Years ago I asked the soon to be director of the famous Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens what tree he would like for a wedding present. A Ginkgo tree it was to be. Since then, I have known these trees and, like so many, been fascinated by them. I now have a Ginkgo in my garden, and I love its autumnal glow and the way the leaves pirouette around in the zephyrs, like dancers, on my pool. The ambiguity and mystery of the softly curved bilobed leaves, the brimming vase of water, captured silver air bubbles and the reflections from my garden all begged to be painted.
