My studio in Port Adelaide overlooks the Port River. This is a working port with a palette of soft hues and strong tonal changes. The wider area includes the Barker Inlet where mangroves line the edges of the estuary, and where a ship’s graveyard holds artefacts from former maritime days. A myriad of creatures including dolphins, jellyfish, seabirds and other marine vertebrate live within these water passages that are linked to the open sea. I am not interested in painting the views as such, but am definitely influenced by the space, weather, water and changing light that makes up this magical environment. These elements appear abstractly in my work and form the basis to my painted maritime narratives.
