Christina Cordero

Christina Cordero was born in Chile and developed her unique style of art making through years of travel and exploration. In 1973, she immigrated to Australia after studying and teaching at universities in Chile and France. In Australia, she studied painting and printmaking, and in 1990 she received her Diploma of Fine Arts from the National Art School in Sydney.

Christina’s imagery arises from a highly personal realm, as she draws upon her past experiences and translates these into a unique visual language;  a delicate, symbolic form of imagery that is a poetic fusion of mythology, travel, language, music and imagination.

Using a variety of motifs such as boats, crescent moons, animals and primitive figures, Christina has created a world of stories from the viewpoint of women, that feels both ancient and contemporary at the same time.

Also highly influenced by music (particularly Mozart) and musical theory, her work is characterised by the free association of ideas and interwoven narratives associated with Latin-American literature, known as ‘magic realism’. Consequently, at times her work suggests the romance of antique maps and folkloric illustration, underscored by the reality of dual histories.

“The images in my work are both allusive and elusive. They reflect a diversity of cultural experiences and combine the real and the surreal, the personal and the collective, the serious and the whimsical… and a wish to discover the ‘new’, the ‘surreal’, and ‘the unknown’”.

Art Images Gallery has been representing Christina for more than 30 years. Now retired, Christina has bestowed us with the responsibility of managing her portfolio.
