Now showing at Art Images Gallery, Retrograde is a solo exhibition of new paintings by South Australian artist Marisha Matthews, on view from 24 April to 24 May 2026 in Norwood.

In this latest body of work, Matthews explores light, surface, and reflection through a series of richly layered paintings. Her approach is both painterly and luminous, capturing the shifting qualities of glass, ceramics, and polished domestic objects. Texture and sheen sit side by side, creating works that feel at once tactile and atmospheric.

Retrograde draws on a Gen X childhood shaped by the interiors of the 1950s through to the 1970s. Rather than focusing on the bold clichés of the era, Matthews turns her attention to the quieter details, floral teacups, inherited furnishings, and the muted, autumnal tones of everyday domestic spaces. These once overlooked objects become the foundation for a subtle and evocative visual language.

The exhibition reflects on how painting can bring the past into the present. Objects that may have once felt outdated or disposable are reconsidered as sources of beauty, pattern, and memory. Through layered surfaces and carefully observed light, Matthews reworks these familiar forms into something contemporary and enduring.
Retrograde invites viewers to slow down and spend time with each work, noticing the interplay between reflection, colour, and surface.
