I have a deep, lifelong connection to the sea and its sustaining power. I am continually drawn to the way the ocean and coastline shape our experiences, their colours, forms, and textures shifting in an instant with the changing light, weather, and tides. The forms within this work evoke movement across and through the sea, inviting viewers to reflect on its ever-changing nature and the enduring relationship between people and the marine environment.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0866/3485/6769/files/bfa601d3-a1fe-4b6c-be60-787b353eeae5-l.jpg?v=1785386212
rear-vision-mirror
Rear Vision Mirror

Looking behind can bring into focus what was beautiful about the past. Like a rear-view mirror, memory offers a perspective that is both reflective and selective, allowing familiar forms to be reimagined through the lens of the present. This work explores that interplay between nostalgia and reinterpretation, drawing inspiration from the visual language of the mid-century period.

Vintage motel signage became the starting point for this piece. Once designed to capture attention through bold graphics, distinctive typography, and sculptural forms, these signs now evoke a sense of optimism, travel, and cultural identity. I have distilled and reinterpreted their forms, colours, and textures into a contemporary visual language.

Using plywood, paint, and resin, I have synthesised their graphic and three-dimensional qualities into an abstract composition that celebrates the aesthetic richness of the era while inviting new ways of seeing. The work reflects on how design from the past continues to influence our visual culture, reminding us that looking back is not simply an act of remembrance, but an opportunity to discover enduring beauty and fresh meaning.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0866/3485/6769/files/7fcf8247-f009-4472-a673-c1f454ea73b3-l.jpg?v=1785386224
tree-of-life-1
Tree of Life

For many years I had contemplated creating a Tree of Life work, waiting until the idea felt resolved enough to pursue. A significant influence was a John Coburn artwork my father gave me many years ago. Coburn's ability to distil the natural world into bold, symbolic forms has remained with me, providing both inspiration and a point of departure.
As the work evolved, it became a reflection on connection and continuity. It prompted thoughts of family, mentors, and the individuals whose guidance and example shape our lives. The tree becomes more than a botanical form; it is a universal symbol of growth, resilience, belonging, and the relationships that sustain us across generations.
While acknowledging the influence of mid-century modern aesthetics, the work reinterprets these ideas through my own visual language of layered timber, colour, and resin. The distinctive curved-corner frame is integral to the composition, extending the work beyond the image itself and reinforcing its sculptural presence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0866/3485/6769/files/f0b14369-7c3f-467b-bcc5-7a4db9366e5a-l.jpg?v=1785386234
golden-hour-inn
Golden Hour Inn

This work draws on the bold visual language of mid-century American motel signage, whose sculptural forms and graphic simplicity have long resonated with my interest in abstraction and design. Created to attract the attention of weary travellers along seemingly endless highways, these iconic signs embodied the optimism, movement, and modernity of their era.

Rather than replicating these familiar forms, I have reinterpreted them through a restrained palette of natural materials, including plywood, timber, paint, and resin. A central challenge was to transform these humble materials into a sculptural canvas that balances solidity with lightness, geometry with softness.

Retro-futuristic symbolism emerges through a flowing cut-out form that is filled with high-gloss clear resin. This void suggest portals, reflections, or imagined futures, contrasting with the warmth and tactility of the timber. The interplay between organic materials and polished surfaces creates a dialogue between past and future, nostalgia and possibility.

By softening the hard-edged geometry of the original signage with curved forms and natural textures, the work celebrates the enduring appeal of mid-century design while reimagining it through a contemporary sculptural language.
