Siv Grava

Born in Victoria in 1954, South Australian artist Siv Grava is known to create rich portraits and vivid interpretations of the Australian landscape. Siv is of Latvian descent and originally studied medicine before completing a BA in Fine Arts from the Victorian College of the Arts and a Graduate Diploma of Education at Melbourne State College.

Moving to the arid remote regions of SA in 1988, Siv divided her time between community cultural development and her studio practice, winning the National Doug Moran Portrait Prize in 1992. She currently lives in Elliston on the Great Australian Bight.

Her work has evolved pictorially a number of times. Her interest lies primarily with colour, exploring the juxtaposition of line and tone and possibilities within the visual field. Conceptually, her paintings bring together elements of duality, fragmentariness, impermanence and perception.
