Exhibition 17th March 2017 - 15th April 2017
Kath Oliphant studied Fine Arts at the South Australian School of Art, majoring in painting and taught art in schools.
In 2010 Kath left teaching and seized an opportunity to travel extensively and explore other possibilities. The feeling of wanderlust, travel and journey inspires her current work. Earth forms, rivers, roads, tracks, paths, architecture, design, colour and pattern are all sources of inspiration and starting points for her painting.
A pivotal and serendipitous experience was a visit to China where she observed painters using traditional materials and methods, handmade papers, inks and brushes. Since painting with ink Kath has been able to work spontaneously and intuitively and connect her travel experiences with the materials in an immediate and uncompromising way. The first mark dictates the direction of the composition and layers are built up to create movement, shape and texture, revealing new forms and relationships.
